Working with a lead advisor

Preparing for tenant management is a complex task, so the Tenant Empowerment Programme can pay for the services of a lead advisor to help your group work through the processes involved.

The role of a lead advisor

A lead advisor is a person or organisation, chosen and appointed by your tenants’ group, who will guide the group through the tenant management development process.

The lead advisor should:

  • make sure that your group has good information to base your decisions on
  • know the new Common Assessment Model (CAM) and Approved Assessor Service procedures
  • make sure the group carries out the right training and development, and
  • prepare all the funding applications, reports and claims while your group’s status is ‘unincorporated’.

You can read more about the role of a lead advisor in the booklet Residents Choice.

How to appoint a Lead Advisor

The National Federation of Tenants Management Organisations (NFTMO) has a searchable database of Lead Advisors in the resources section of their website, www.nftmo.com

We also strongly recommend your group reads about the appointing of a Lead Advisor in Residents Choice and gets advice about the appointment process from your landlord’s tenant participation or resident involvement team.

Before you appoint a lead advisor, you must make sure they have sent a financial pre-qualification questionnaire (FPQQ) to the Tenant Empowerment Programme (TEP)  team and that they are eligible to receive TEP grant.  E-mail us on tenantempowerment@tsa.gsx.gov.uk for more details.  We cannot pay TEP grant to any lead advisor who has not gone through this process.
