Who runs us?

We are the independent regulator of affordable housing in England.

We are independent of government. However, the Secretary of State can direct us in relation to certain standards – those affecting rents, the quality of accommodation and tenant engagement.

We are governed by our board which is responsible for supervising our performance and the way we are run. The Board approves strategic and corporate plans, budgets, audited annual accounts and any changes to the structure of how we are run. You can also find details of our executive team here.

Our Chief Executive, Peter Marsh, is our Accounting Officer, which means he is responsible to Parliament for making sure that we use public funds properly. We can also be investigated by the National Audit Office and can be called before the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee.

Every year we publish our annual report and accounts and lay it before Parliament so that it is available to the House of Commons and its members. We also publish our corporate plan, which shows what we plan to do in the future.

We come under the authority of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, who can investigate claims of mismanagement.

We are currently funded by Communities and Local Government.
